A transparent overlay puts a small transparent image on top of your actual image. When a visitor right-click saves the image it is the transparent image that is save rather than the actual image.
Most of the time transparent overlays will also cause the image not to print if the visitor prints from the browser. There is a browser setting that will allow it to print, but it is disabled by default.
